A hidden network of power cables and pipelines on the ocean floor sustains our world, but it is no longer safe. National security expert Elisabeth Braw and award winning investigative journalist Bojan Pancevski examine whether control of the deep sea is becoming the next geopolitical frontline. In conversation with Julia Wheeler, they discuss the high stakes fragility of this infrastructure underpinning modern life and how the depths below may shape the future of global security.
This one matters to us because it is the same subject we work on every day. The cables under the sea are not an abstract concern. They are physical infrastructure with real endpoints, and protecting them is as much a security engineering problem as a geopolitical one.

Origin8tive CEO Brian Lewis joins Director of Cyber Assurance Chris Griffiths of BT for a live recording of the Cyber Made Human podcast. Chris has spent thirty years in engineering and has worked in the secure space since 2014. He leads a team of more than 250 engineers across four UK locations, covering everything from data to secure technology.
Led by Alice Violet Founder of Violet and Partners, the conversation looks at the physical infrastructure we depend on. That means subsea cables, the sensitive endpoints that make up our critical national infrastructure, and what sovereign capability actually means in practice. It also covers the work BT and Origin8tive are doing together on fibre, and the technologies now being used to spot disruption before it becomes an incident. It is a useful session if you want to understand why physical security and cyber security are increasingly the same conversation.

Careers Event: Breaking into Cyber Security
Wednesday 14th October
8:30am - 11:00am Mirari, Ocho, 8 Imperial Square, Cheltenham GL50 1QB
I'm not technical enough for cyber security? I'm too old to start my career again? I want to change careers after having children? I'd love to move into cyber security but I have no idea where to start?
If you have ever thought any of the above, this event is for you.
Cyber security has a reputation problem when it comes to hiring. From the outside it can look like a closed industry that only takes people with computer science degrees and a decade of experience behind them. That has never really been true, and it is less true now than ever. Our sector needs people who can talk to customers, manage projects, spot patterns, stay calm under pressure and explain complicated things clearly. Those skills are built in all sorts of places.
At this Origin8tive event, panelists Josh Taylor, Infrastructure Engineer, Vicki Morris, Business Support Lead, Natalie Bayley, Infrastructure Engineer, and Morgan Brudenell, Head of HR will share their tips and insights for getting started in cyber.
Origin8tive is growing and hiring across a range of roles, so Morgan will share what she actually looks for when an application lands on her desk. You will also hear from our CEO, Brian Lewis, who began his own career as an apprentice.
Doors open at 8:30 with coffee and pastries, the panel runs from 9:15. Afterwards there is time to ask your own questions, meet the wider Origin8tive team and talk to people who have already made the move you are considering.
You do not need a technical background, a degree or any prior experience. Just bring your questions. The event is free to attend and places are limited, so please register in advance.
Across the week, members of the Origin8tive team will be at events throughout Gloucestershire Tech Week. If you want to talk to us about the work we do, the roles we are hiring for, or anything you hear in one of the sessions above, come and find us.
